• The Coastal Gardener Springs into Action!

    Spring has sprung!

I love this time of year. Everyday something amazing happens; a seedling emerges, a bud breaks or a flower opens.

In the garden I’ve been cutting back and even removing some plants that have got too big. Although it’s always sad to say goodbye it gives the opportunity to try something new and I’m looking forward to seeing how Lomelosia ‘Blue Mound’, Berkheya purpurea and Baptista australis do in my gravel garden.

In the poly tunnel it’s full steam ahead as the seedlings are growing vigorously and need potting on. All the plants we sell are sown and grown here in recycled pots filled with organic peat free compost. This year, as well as growing Coastal Gardener favourites like cosmos, scabious and cornflowers, I’m also thrilled to be nurturing more unusual plants like Solanium pyracanthum and Dierama Cosmos.

There are just two places left on our Coastal Gardening Day on Saturday 25th April. During the day you’ll find out about which plants thrive in coastal conditions and how to create the best possible environment for your plants to flourish. We’ll look at which edible and decorative plants thrive and as well as wind breaks, planting techniques, feeding, irrigation and weed suppression. I’ll share with you my ideas on designing and planting coastal gardens and offer advice about your own garden (so please do bring along plans and/or photographs of your garden) Booking is essential and the day, which will start at 10am and end at 4pm, costs £45.00. Complimentary drinks and homemade cakes will be provided; please bring a light lunch.

Our first Plant Sale of the year will be on Sunday 26th April from 10.30am until 4.00pm. Last year lots of our visitors wanted to grow the annuals they saw in our garden but by then it was too late to sow and grow, so this year we’re growing a few extras for you! Limited stock of salsify, scabiosa ‘Black cat’, Ammi majus, cornflowers, Cerinthe major, Cosmos, Mexican Sunflowers and more… Our ever-expanding range of perennials and shrubs will also be available and you’ll be able to reserve any of our latest additions that are too small to leave the nursery. This is a free event and everyone is very welcome.

(Both the above events will be run in the Coastal Gardener’s garden at Blue Haze, 24 Beachfield Rd, Bembridge, Isle of Wight, PO35 5TN).

For those of you who would like to know more about what The Coastal Gardener’s up to why not read our blog www.thecoastalgardener.co.uk/blog or follow on Facebook at thecoastalgardeneriow or Twitter The Coastal Gardener @GerryPrice3

I’m off to the Gardens Illustrated Garden Festival in Malmesbury for the weekend – should be fun!

Hope you’ll come and see us very soon

    Best regards
