• Autumn News

The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness has arrived but the garden is still putting on a good show with the cosmos, Salvia ulignosa and grasses looking particularly stunning in the early evening when backlit by the setting sun. The fruit trees have cropped heavily this year and the vegetable plot continues to provide courgettes, tomatoes, beetroot, spinach and lovely green beans.

As well as designing gardens for clients in Bembridge, Cowes and Ventnor I’ve been busy drawing up plans for our new nursery at Fakenham Farm in St Helens. The previous tenants, a herd of pigs, have been re-homed elsewhere on the farm. Over the next few weeks the land will be prepared before we start building raised beds, erect a large poly tunnel and install a shed. All very exciting! If you’re passing by do call in. The farm is on Eddington Rd, between Seaview and St Helens. There’s a café, The View, on the site and plenty of car parking.

I’m very much looking forward to “Gardening By The Book” on Friday 16th October. Artist Minette Dogilewski (www.quaycrafts.com) will teach simple printmaking and book binding techniques and will inspire you to create your own book. I’ll be on hand to help you source materials from the garden and to make the tea! The £45 fee includes all materials and tuition as well as an endless supply of tea and homemade cake! (Further details on the web site www.thecoastalgardener.co.uk/events). If you would like to join us please do let me know as soon as possible as there are only a couple of places left.

Our final event for this year is Make-it Christmas on Saturday 21st November. For the last couple of years we've hosted Christmas with the Coastal Gardener & Friends, a Christmas Fair with a difference. It's been very successful but we decided that it was time for a change so, instead of inviting you to come and buy Christmas gifts, we're inviting you to come and make them yourself! You'll have the chance to make various types of wreaths, gifts made from sailing charts, drift wood Christmas trees and, as they say, much, much more! If you’d like to take a stance against the commercialism of Christmas or just want a day to explore your creativity then call/text/email and I’ll book a place for you.

I hope that the autumn is mellow and fruitful for you.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm

    Best wishes
